In a bid to check animal sacrifice during the Sulia Yatra, which
is beginning from Tuesday, the Balangir district administration on Monday
clamped Section 144 CrPC in the sensitive areas.
“Section 144 has been promulgated in the Badkhala,
Sankhala and Nuankhala areas in Khairguda and Kumuria villages to prevent
people from mass killing of animals. A total of four platoons of force are
going to be deployed to maintain law and order during Sulia Yatra,” district SP
Ravi Prakash said.
He also requested tribal leaders to cooperate with the
administration in checking mass killing of animals. However, the tribals
opposed the administration’s promulgation of Section 144.
“Tribals have every right to follow there age-old religious
practices. We offer animals to the deity for one day inside the forest.
Everyday hundreds of animals are killed in the roadside in towns,” said
Niranjan Bisi of Paschima Odisha Adivasi Kalyan Mahasangha.
