Members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by its
local head Ajay Das on Friday gheraoed the Balangir Municipality office
protesting against the apathy of the civic body in construction of toilets to
check open defecation.
“Poor women are running from pillar to post to
get their assistance money for construction of toilets. Since 2015, only Rs
2,000 has been deposited in the account of each beneficiary and no progress has
been made since then”, alleged Das.
Receiving a memorandum in this regard,
municipality Executive Officer Sachidananda Satpathy said that out of the total
5,489 toilets sanctioned for 21wards of the municipality, applications were
invited and a total of 2,800 applications have been received.
After scrutiny, only 1,800 applications were
found valid. So far, 126 latirnes have been completed and payment has been
made; and another 26 are in process.
“I will send officers to each ward to sensitise
people to collect forms. Two years ago, there were provisions of payment of Rs
2,000,” said Satpathy further.
