Balangir: A workshop on Millets and Agricultural Biodiversity, organised by the Millets Panchyat Bongomunda and supported by Millets Network of India, was held here on Saturday. Speakers at the event stressed on promotion of minor millets crop as it is rich in nutrition and could check malnutrition and ensure food security of poor people. It also helps in reducing global warming as its cultivation requires no use of chemical fertilizers. Among others, District Agriculture Officer RC Naik, Nilamani Mishra, BN Srikant, RS Hota, Dilip Kumar Dhala spoke on the occasion.

BIHAN PARAB HELD TO POPULARISE TRADITIONAL SEEDS

A two-day Bihan Parab was held in Bargarh to populaise traditional paddy varieties and farm practices.

“Since 2008 we have been organising this Bihan Parab to popularise, propagate and promote the traditional paddy in our area. We are not in favour of use of company seeds. The high-yielding seeds require excess use of chemical fertilizer and insecticide, leading to damage of soil and its ecology. Our traditional seeds are drought resistant and eco-friendly. It is wrong to say that traditional seeds cannot give high production, said Siba Prasad Sahu of Ahimsha club, Bhutibahal, which organised the show. This year we observed the Bihan Parab for two days on December 27 and 28, with support from Millets Network of India (MINI) and have displayed 100 traditional varieties of paddy collected from farmers, besides six varieties of minor millets including Shari, Kudo, Mandia, Gurjee and others, informed Sahu.

The traditional paddy varieties used in the region in past include Karni Phool, Harishankar, AaakashPatri, Dhob Sariaan, Suna Kathi, Radha Jugal,  Aakul, Dahikhul, Juhli, Dengberi, Kumarmani, Rani Saheba, Kamal Shankar, Rani Siiali, Suna Harin, Sunamukhi and many others. “Our forefathers were strong and stout as they consumed foods of crops which were grown without chemical fertilizer. The chemical fertiliser has damaged our ecology including killing friendly insects and small fish, gholi, and earthworm which increase fertility of soil. Hence, it is high time we got back to those farm seed types and practices,” said Kosli poet Haldhar Nag.

Bargarh BJD MP Dr Prabash Kumar Singh while appreciating the effort of the Ahinsha Club, Bhutibahal in propagating traditional farm practices, assured all support from the Government. He also supported for opening traditional seed banks in villages to preserve and protect paddy seeds. Bargarh Zilla Parishad president Gitaanjali Puta inaugurated the two- day BihanParab. 25 Kosali poets those who have written poems of traditional paddy seeds were honoured. A quiz competition on traditional seed and minor millet was held and successful ones got certificates.

I am posting an old photograph taken six months which shows that the Sun isgoing down in the west behind the Wheel.
Since time immemorial two things are moving constantly-1) Time and Tides.These two things have never stopped,and moving on.The Sun set in the west only to rise in the east ---and the time circle moves on--A large number of people are gearing to prepare the entry of new year 2015.
That is fine.But that moment is just like another moment .Thus time would continue its march forward always---better we should strive to build a better human being,society, society, nation and world.
The year 2014 is scheduled passed into oblivion after few hours and 2015 would start.

Defying the prohibitory orders imposed by the district administration, once again animal killing took place much to the chagrin of animal lovers at the tribal festival Sulia Yatra in the district.

This year the district administration clamped prohibitory orders in six places including Badkhala, Saankhala, Khairguda, besides three other places in the district. However, notwithstanding the scanning of the administration, the police and the media, hundreds of animals including goat, buffalo, cock and other animals were killed at Badkhala and other places on Tuesday by the tribal devotees before their presiding deity.

Every year on second Tuesday of Paush month, Sulia Yatra is observed near Khairguda village in Deogaon block, 30km from here. The spot is popularly known as Badkhala. However, the animal sacrifice is also executed in a few adjoining places. A few years back, some rationalists had approached the Odisha High Court seeking a ban on killing of animals in Sulia venues and the court had imposed a ban and asked the district administration to take measures to stop the cruelty to animals in the festival.

However, according to sources, no awareness drive was held by the district administration this year as it used to do in past. Moreover, activists opposing the animal killing at Sulia have been somewhat inactive since last few years. Only at the last minute, the prohibitory orders were imposed by the district administration, which was breached easily by the people. Many also viewed it as eyewash.

Police personnel including three Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) were deployed at the place. Asked to comment on the tribals displaying their weapons and killing animals in violation of the prohibitory orders, SDPO NarayanNaik said the guilty would be taken to task. “Animal sacrifice at the altar of tribal deity in Suliaa Jatra is a part and parcel of tribal customs. We are proud of our tradition and would stand by it come what may. We are least bothered about what the administration does,” said Balangir Zilla Adivasi Kalyan Sangh president Braja Kishore Singhbhoi.

A two days tradition seed festival was organised at village Dangbahal in Gaisillet Block of Bargarh district. It was organised by Ahinsha Club BhutiBahal and supported byMilliets Network of India(MINI).While Bargarh Zilla Parishad chairman Gitanjali Puta graced the Seed festival  on the first day,, on the second day BargarhMP Dr PrabhasKumar Singh was chief guest. Sri Singh  stressed the need for creation of more traditional seed bank in village level and awareness among farmers on this issue.

A total of 100 varieties of traditional paddy seeds were displayed ,besides six minor millet says Siba Prasad Sahuof Ahinsha Club.Bihan Praab(Seed festival) is being observed by Ahinsha club led by SibaPrasadSahu since 2008. Siba Prasad Sahu along with other members,  are trying for preservation and promotion of traditional paddy seeds and its cultivation ,besides  minor millet in that area.

BJD DAY A STRENGTH SHOW IN BALANGIR

The observation of the 17th birth anniversary of the Biju Janta Dal (BJD) here was an occasion to show unity and strength in the party rank and file.

The entire town was bedecked with BJD flags, banners and arch gates welcoming people. Senior leader of BJD and Rajya Sabha MP AU Singh Deo along with his younger son Arkesh Singh Deo left no stone unturned to make it a grand success. The turnout was impressive and most importantly, a majority of the workers were women. The meeting was conducted in great discipline which was marked by pin-drop silence found at the venue.

AU took every care to carry with him old colleagues who were with him in the formation of BJD period and allowed them to speak first. Those include Ramesh Sahu, Murali Guru, Radhakeshab Mishra, Pradeep Guru, Harekrushna Sarangi, Pradyut Mishra. AU took special care to let the women leaders like Gita Bisi, Gopa Mahanada and Titiligrah MLA TukuniSahu Sahoo speak earlier.

“I have taken up the Khurdha- Bolangir Railway line to be expedited and construction from Bolangir side to be started with Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu who assured me to look into the matter. Moreover, I have also taken up the demand to set up the second agriculture university with Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik in Balangir,” said AU.

The speakers stressed the need to strengthen the BJD base in grassroots. Madhu Das of Belpada said that Biju Patnaik should be given Bharat Ratna while Gita Bisi, Lopa Mahanada, Pakruti Devi ,Santa Behera and others highlighted the dream of late Biju Patnaik in ensuring women development and lauded the effort of the Naveen Patnaik Government  to realize the late Chief Minister’s dream.

Kantabanji MLA Ayub Khan criticised the Opposition leaders for not allowing to run the last session of the Assembly. Titilagarh MLA Sahu said she would strive to realise the unfulfilled dream of late Abhimany Sahu. BJD State council member Arkesh Singh Deo called upon workers to strengthen the party base in grassroots. MP Kalikesh Singh Deo, however, was absent and his message was read out.
