Astronomers’ &RAD@home citizen science Mumbai, discovered Odd Radio Circle (ORC).

===============

The most distant and most powerful ‘odd radio circle’ (ORC) known so far has been discovered by astronomers and Researchers led by the University of Mumbai made their discovery with the help of RAD@home citizen science.

ORCs are enormous, faint, ring-shaped structures of radio emission surrounding galaxies that are visible only in the radio band of the electromagnetic spectrum and consist of relativistic, magnetised plasma. Previous  research has suggested they might be caused by shockwaves from merging supermassive black holes or galaxies.

Researchers led by the University of Mumbai made their discovery with the help of The RAD@home citizen science and the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR), the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope operating at low frequencies (10 to 240 megahertz).

The source, designated RAD J131346.9+500320, lies nearly at redshift ~0.94 (when the universe was half its current age), making it both the most distant and the most powerful ORC known to date. It also has not one but two intersecting rings – only the second such example with this feature – sparking more questions than answers.

“This work shows how professional astronomers and citizen scientists together can push the boundaries of scientific discovery.

“ ORCs are among the most bizarre and beautiful cosmic structures we’ve ever seen—and they may hold vital clues about how galaxies and black holes co-evolve, hand-in-hand.” RAD J131346.9+500320 is the first ORC discovered through citizen science and the first identified with the help of LOFAR says Dr Ananda Hota, founder of the RAD@home Astronomy Collaboratory for citizen science research.Mumbai.

These curious rings are a relatively new astronomical phenomenon, having been detected for the first time just six years ago. Only a handful of confirmed examples are known so far. They typically are 10-20 times the size of our Milky Way galaxy.

Now, a new study published today(Wednesay) in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society proposes that the rings of light may actually be linked to superwind outflows from spiral host radio galaxies.

LOFAR is a cutting-edge pan-European radio telescope, with hundreds of thousands of simple antennas spread across the Netherlands and partner stations in many European countries. Working together as one giant interferometer, it provides an exceptionally sharp and sensitive view of the sky at low radio frequencies. It enables astronomers to look back billions of years to a time before the first stars and galaxies formed and survey vast areas of the low-frequency radio sky.

Alongside this discovery, the RAD@home Collaboratory also found two other unusual cosmic giants with radio rings.

RAD-ORC-3ring-collage-with-credit.png

The first, RAD J122622.6+640622, is a galaxy nearly three million light-years across—more than 30 times the size of our Milky Way. One of its powerful jets suddenly bends sideways, as if forced off course, and then blows a spectacular radio ring about 300,000 light-years wide.

The second, RAD J142004.0+621715, stretches across 1.4 million light-years and shows a similar ring of radio emission at the end of one of its jets, with another narrow radio jet on the other side of the host galaxy.

Both galaxies sit in crowded regions of space called galaxy clusters, where their jets likely interact with surrounding matter, million degree hot thermal plasma, which shapes these striking cosmic structures.

All three objects are found in galaxy clusters weighing about 100 trillion Suns, suggesting that interactions of relativistic magnetized plasma jets with the surrounding hot thermal plasma may help shape these rare rings.

“These discoveries show that ORCs and radio rings are not isolated curiosities—they are part of a broader family of exotic plasma structures shaped by black hole jets, winds, and their environments,” says Dr. Pratik Dabhade, of the Astrophysics division of the National Centre for Nuclear Research, in Warsaw, Poland.

The fact that citizen scientists uncovered them highlights the continued importance of human pattern recognition, even in the age of machine learning.

With upcoming facilities such as the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), astronomers expect many more ORCs to be uncovered.

At the same time, new optical surveys such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will provide the redshifts and environments of their host galaxies, helping to piece together how these mysterious rings form and evolve.

For now, these three new cosmic rings—discovered not by automated software but by sharp-eyed citizen scientists—represent an important step toward unlocking the secrets of these vast, puzzling structures.

Bolangir Sarpanchs urge Government to solve their problems

October 16, 2025.

Thursday.

Bolangir: President of Sarpanch Mahasangha Bolangir, Birabar Sahu, has urged the government to take steps to solve the problems of PRI members so that they could work properly in panchayats.

Speaking to the media at the third annual meeting here on Wednesday, Sahu pointed out that, as per section 24 of Odisha Gram Panchayat Act 1964, a no-confidence motion can be brought against a sarpanch after two and a half years.

This is an old provision. A lot of administrative changes have taken place in the meanwhile thanks to technology and regular monitoring of panchayats. It has been seen that in many cases, this provision is being used to settle political scores. PRI members are affected in this process. We urge the government, either to amend or remove the provision, to ensure a stable term for sarpanch for speedy development of Panchayats in five years.

During the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan, the Central Government was giving money directly to panchayats. However, in the 15th Five-Year Plan, the percentage of sanctioned money was reduced from 100 to 60 percent. We urge the Government

to restore to its original form of providing 100% in the next five-year plan, Sahu says further

After the electrification in rural areas and water supply, Grampanchayat is making payments for electricity charges and water supply project expenses, which has become burdensome.

Moreover, even after submission of the action plan by the Panchayat in time, both Central and State assistance are not provided in time, affecting the development activities and creating a lot of problems for sarpanch. We urge the government to look into this matter and sort out the problem by the sarpanch to ensure speedy development in grassroot areas to make a prosperous Odisha, Sahu says further.

Earlier, Kantabanji

MLA Laxman Bag said that the government is taking steps to strengthen PRI system in the state . He assured to look into their demands.

Bolangir Zilla Parishad Chairman Devaki Sahu also supported the genuine demands of the sarpanch.

60 elephants are staying in Tikhali Reserve forest in Bolangir

==============================================================

13September 2025

Bolangir ; Bolangir Forest is now home to around 90 jumbos, and they have been staying in the forest range of Muribahal, Saintla, Gudvella and Titilagarh since last year, much to the delight of wildlife and elephant conservation enthusiasts here..

Divisional Forest Officer Bolangir, Ajit Kumar Bisi says that since the last few months, a total of 60 elephants have been staying in Tikhari reserve forest in the Muribahal forest  range area.

Tikhari Reserve Forest is spread over around 1500 square kilometers and shares borders with the forest of Kesinga in the Kalahandi district.

As the elephants are getting adequate food, water, and shelter inside the Tikhari reserve forest, we believe these elephants are staying here for such a long time.

As the elephants are getting everything inside the forest, they are hardly coming outside the forest. However, forest personnel are tracking and monitoring their movement daily, says DFO Bolangir Ajit Bisi.

Bolangir  forest shares forest borders with the Bargarh, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Sonepur, and Boudh districts.

Earlier, there were reports of migration/movement of Jumbos from Kantamal(Boudh district forest) to Athagaon area of the Bolangir forest range and to the Deogaon range area and return.

Another group of elephants would migrate from the Padampur forest of Bargarh district to the Patnagarh area near the Harishankar forest, and they would return again.

Another group here from the Nuapada area visits the Tureikela range, and after movement, they again return to their old habitat.

However,as the  elephants are not moving beyond the Tikhari reserve forest area shows that

they are getting food,,water and shelter there. These elephants are hardly coming out of the  forest. Our forest department personnel are monitoring and tracking their movement, and we are taking all steps to avoid human-elephant conflict," says the DFO further.

According to the latest report, forest officials have got the, Expelled Placenta of an elephant,, indicating the birth of a baby elephant there a few days  ago

Elephants move long distances in one night and are migratory in nature. Contrary to it, they are staying in one place, inside the Tikhari reserve forest in the Muribahal forest range. Wildlife lovers here opined for a  study of these elephants to know more in detail about their long stay in one place

They bind golden leaves only to seal their own fate!

SUDHIR MISHRA | BALANGIR

Ironically, the persons, who pick up the Kendu leaf, decide the grades, bind and pack up for sale amid harsh conditions, do not even get a minimum living wage while the State Government earns a huge profit.

Even though the Government makes a huge profit, about `100 core annually from the Kendu leaf trade and has raised recently the price of the leaf per carry, the real workers, who perform the skillful and crucial job of selecting, grading and binding the golden leaves for six-eight months in a year, are neglected most and denied the due payment of wages besides the harsh working and living conditions.

In the Kendu-leaf operation, besides the forest department, the leaf-pluckers, Munshis, Chaparasis, Dakuas, Mates (labour contracters) binders, seasonal labourers and transporters are involved.

The Kendu leaf, dubbed as golden leaf, is found mostly in Balangir, Patnagarh and Titiligarh Kendu Leaf Divisions.

However, the entire KBK region, namely Padampur (Bargarh district), Bhawanipatna (Kalahandi district), Khariar (Nuapada district), Nabarangpur and Jeypore KL divisions come under the Balangir Kendu Leaf Circle.

The Kendu leaf is not grown as it is grows naturally and it grows mostly in the private farmers’ lands.

The bush-cutting operation starts in the third week of February and plucking starts by the second week of April till the third week of May.

After the Kendu leaves are plucked, they are dried and some dressing is done for seven days.

After the leaf is dried, the role of the binders starts. First of all, the binders select the quality of leaves and according to the quality, it is graded 1-2, 3-4 and 5-6.

A minimum of two persons are required and one has to select the quality and another person keeps it in the bag.

The number of bundles they pack into the jute bags, they get the wage.

A binder gets `27 per bundle for class one to two and `23 for grade three to four and grade five to six.

Besides, two persons pack these bags into it and they get `22 per bundle. The binders leave behind their homes from April and return by December- January.

During the eight months, they face a lot of ordeals, including life risk and death.

Death, due to snakebite, is common and many even go unreported.

As they stay away from homes and carry their children along with them, they lose their entitlements and benefits from various Government schemes, including the Public Distribution System (PDS) and more importantly, the discontinuation of their children’s education. Even though they work as skilled labours, they do not even get the minimum wage let alone the wage of a skilled labour.

Moreover, the day they do not work, they do not get wage. When the work is affected due to absence of jute bag or fibre rope, they do not get wage besides, the weekly food assistance is also inadequate.

When they shift from place to place, it also affects them. The place where they reside during the work is not good. They become victims of snakebite mishaps and even malaria.

Ironically, the Government policy is also unfavourable. As per the Government rules, when a binder completes binding 250 bundles, he/she is eligible for insurance cover. A labourer who has worked for two months is eligible for insurance.

“What is the guarantee that a labourer would not be attacked within a day or two? This norms should be relaxed,” opined an NGO activist.

Even as there are around 4,50,000 kendu leaf pluckers in the district here and around 6,000 binders, performing the skillful job, they are getting hardly `80-90 a day even after losing the PDS entitlement and the child’s education besides the harsh living conditions.

“The Government should extend much more benefits besides relaxing the norms for insurance cover as the Government is earning at least `100 crore of profit only at their costs,” opined another NGO worker.

Ironically, the KL Grant, given to the Panchayats, hardly reaches the pluckers, binders and often ends up in construction of buildings and other things.

Even as the Government is earning a huge profit from the grassroots level kendu leaf workers, they are not getting timely wage and other benefits.

“They work more than normal hours, but ill-fated. The Government, that runs on the profit earned from this trade, should take steps so that these people get the wage timely and other benefits reach them,” demanded Kulamani Sahu, adding if the State would look into it.

Women kendu leaf pluckers of Ramsingha village under Dhamnasar keduleafphadi in Gadshankar Dungripali Kenduleaf Range staged a dharna in front of the DFO office here on Tuesday demanding immediate payment of wages, bonus and other benefits to them. The agitating women said they have not received dues and benefits while other Kendu leaf pluckers of the village have got dues and umbrella.

Mukhi Pradhan, a plucker, said though officials have taken Xerox copies of their documents for checking bank accounts, they have not turned up to them for a long days.

“We will continue our stir until we haven’t received our dues and other benefits,” threatened the women. Gadshankar Dunguripali, Range officer (KL) BiranchiMshra said, “I will enquire into the incident and take necessary measures.

5Villagers of Badtelenpali in the Lower Suktel Project area in Balangir district led by Samajwadi Party leader Arun Mishra on Monday submitted a petition to district Collector M Muthukumar demanding engagement in Kendu leaf plucking.

In the petition, the villagers alleged that while Badtelenpali consist of two Wards, villagers of only one ward are given Kendu leaf plucking work. “Due to arbitrary policy of Munshi, a temporary kendu leaf employee, they were not provided the bush cutting work in February.

Moreover, the Munshi has not called us for plucking of Kendu leaves this month, whereas villagers of another ward are engaged in the same,” said a villager. After getting complaints, Balangir DM Ashok Naik spoke to Divisional Forest Officer (Kenduleaf) PK Sahu, who assured the villagers to look into the matter.

It is common to find electronic items, gold and other costly goods smuggled and sold in market illegally to make huge profit and often caught by police.

However in a new development, Kendu leaf, which is nationalised product and whose trade is carried out by a Government agency and provides a minimum annual profit of over Rs 100 crore to the Government, has turned out to be a new target of smugglers.

Balangir district, which is otherwise infamous for its poverty, distress migration of poor people to brick kilns in other States in search of livelihood, produces one of the finest quality of Kendu leaves.

According to sources, three days ago, a forest official in charge of Kendu leaf trade had gone to the Balangir railway station and noticed suspicious movement of some women. When he inquired, he came to know that Kendu leaf was being smuggled from here to Kolkata.

When the official followed a woman, she fled from the spot. Following the lead, the official located a house near the railway station but couldn't find any Kendu leaf in the house.

However, this has lent credence to reports that Kendu leaf is being smuggled from district to Kolkata in connivance with dishonest officials here. Local have demanded a through inquiry in this regard and action against the culprits.
