BALANGIR MIGRANTS TO BE BROUGHT BACK TO CAST VOTES

While it has shockingly been a normal state of affairs in the western part of Odisha that lakhs of migrant labourers don’t exercise their franchise, the Balangir district administration here has mooted an applauding plan to bring them back to their respective villages to cast votes during the coming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.  

“The district administration would soon convene a meeting of all the registered labour contractors in order to ask them to bring back the workers recruited by them to work outside the State so that they would be able to cast their votes in the forthcoming elections,” Balangir district Collector M Muthukumar told The Pioneer on Friday. Muthukumar also warned that strong action would be taken against those contractors who would disobey the instructions.

According to the reports, over lakhs of workers from the State are now working in various brick kilns in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. They have been to these States since last September/October and are in debt bondage, which forces them to work there till completion of their contact period, it added.

Reports also say that around one lakh people from Bolangir district alone are now engaged at various brick kilns of Andhra Pradesh and other states. However, officially around 21,000 labourbers have been hired by more than 200 labour contractors from this district.

B’NGIR GEARS UP FOR FREE, FAIR ELECTIONS

The district administration will be taking all steps to ensure free and fair elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assembly here. Speaking to mediapersons, district Collector M Muthukumar asserted that the district administration will hold the ensuing polls freely and fairly in strict adherence to the guidelines issued by Election Commission of India.

He said a special drive has been launched to enrol persons who have attained 18 years of age by January 1, 2014 in the voter list on March 9. The Balangir Parliamentary constituency is spread over two revenue districts namely Balangir and Sonepur.

Balangir district has a total of 11, 38, 679 voters which include 590, 213 male voters and 548, 400 female voters. There are a total of 2,09,804 voters in Loisingha, 2,51,089 in Patnagarh, 2,10,736 in Balangir, 2,25,713 in Titilagarh and 2,41,337 in Kantabanji.

BJP State president KV Singh Deo formally opened a BJP office at the old Balangir palace here on Thursday. All election-related activities of the party in the district will be monitored from this office, he said.

Singh Deo said talks are going on with other parties for electoral alliance with the BJP. “We may offer some seats to these parties. The BJP will win the Balangir Lok Sabha seat and many Assembly seats in Balangir district,” he said. The BJP State election committee has already recommended names of Assembly candidates to the party’s central committee and the central committee would announce the names of Assembly candidates on March 8, Singh Deo told mediapersons.

Villagrs allege police atrocities, house damage

Special Rapporteur of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Damodar Sarangi on Tuesday visited the Lower Suktel Budi Anchal area, 30 kilometres from here, and listened to the villagers’ complaints of police abuse and assault.

Villagers of Gadshankar and Dunguripali alleged that the police tortured them while they were on a peaceful protest. They blamed Bolangir SDPO and the then Sub-Collector Jyoti Ranjan Pradhan for the harassment meted out them.

Similarly, Pardhiapali villagers, who have been staging protest for a month now at the dam site, told the Rapporteur that the school buildings and many of their mud houses have developed cracks and, thus, been unsafe for their living due to blasting of the dam construction.

Notably, the NHRC had received two complaints, one on police atrocities and another on loss of livelihood due to the project.

After listening to the villagers’ complaints, Sarangi said, “I have come to conduct an investigation into the complaints. After completion of the inquiry, I would submit a report to the Commission.” He declined to give any comment as to if any human right violated in the area.

Speaking to media persons District CollectorM.Muthukumar asserted that the district administrition is taking steps to hold a free and fair election in the district and steps would be taken to enforce the guidelines issued by Election Commission of India..

However even as the BolangirParliamentray constituency is spread over two revenue district namely Bolangir and Sonepur the information sheet provided to media by district election officials in a press conference today evening (5^th march2014) doesn’t contain any information about the assembly segments  of sonepur district in  Bolangir Parliamentary constituency.
