Rajya Sabha MP AU Singh Deo has urged the Centre for including Balangir in the Nagar Vana-Udyan Yojana. The Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change has proposed to develop 200 city forests across the country under the scheme.
In a letter to Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave, Singh Deo stated that in summer the temperature of different areas of Balangir remains at 45 degree C for more than two months (April to June) and even sometimes goes up to 50 degree C.
He cited the report of Forest Survey of India, Dehradun, where the percentage of forest cover of Balangir district is only 14.61 per cent (967 sqkm) of its geographical area of the district (6,575 Sqkm).
Singh Deo suggested to develop a patch of degraded forest area with shrubs over 25 hectares in the vicinity of city for recreation, conservation and education.
He stated that besides biodiversity conservation and supported services like water and soil conservation, pollution abetment and reduction of heat can be achieved by way of developing the forest.
He said that the city forest can achieve the targets like creating awareness on plants and bio-diversity, educating on conservation of important flora and fauna, including threat perception, ecological re-generation, in-situ biodiversity conservation, health benefit and making city climate-resilient .
