The Congress activists led by President of Indian Youth Congress Balangir Lok Sabha Committee Akash Mishra, District Congress president Bhabagan Bagarti and Mahila Congress president Renuka Patra on Monday staged a dharna before the district Collectorate here demanding resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for the alleged starvation death of Annanpurna Bagarti in Ward-15 of the Balangir Municipality.
They also demanded a CBI inquiry into the irregularities and corruption in the Balangir Municipality. “It is unfortunate that Annapurna Bagarti died due to starvation because of the neglect and apathy of the district administration.
Had the administration acted swiftly, the tragedy would not have occurred,” said Akash Mishra. On the corruption in the municipality, he said that unless the district administration takes action against corrupt official within 10 days, a Balangir Bandh would be observed on the issue.
The unfortunate incident of hunger death has taken place in Ward-15, which is represented by the municipality’s chairperson Damayanti Bag. There has been massive corruption in the municipality in the purchase of different materials, said District Congress vice-president Laxman Meher. DCC president Bhagaban Bagarti said Annapurna died even though her condition had been reported to the district administration earlier.
Nobody from the administration responded to the appeal to save her, he added.
Earlier on Sunday, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Bhupinder Singh, who came here, had condemned the apathetic attitude of the district administration and stated that the Congress would raise this issue in the Assembly during its coming winter session.
The Youth Congress in a memorandum to the State’s Governor through the district administration demanded resignation of the Chief Minister holding him responsible Annapurna Bagarti’s death, a CBI inquiry into corruption in the Balangir Municipality and improvement of roads and sanitation of the town. Additional District Magistrate Sadhab Minz, when contacted, said the district administration has ordered an inquiry into the alleged starvation death. The exact reason behind the death would be known after getting the inquiry report, he added.
