It was a tragic sight near Noida’s Mahamaya Flyover on Friday morning. Two elephants were hit by a speeding truck. One killed, another injured, the pachyderms were lifted by cranes.
According to a senior police official, “The tuskers met with an accident when their caretakers were taking them to Delhi from Dadri. A speeding truck hit them from behind near the flyover. The truck driver was driving rashly. The animals partially came under the wheels of the truck. The mahouts were also injured in the accident and were taken to Noida district hospital for treatment. The driver fled from the spot leaving the truck behind.”
The caretakers, Saukat and Zaheer, stay in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh. On Friday morning, they were returning to Wazirabad in Delhi where they work. A case has been registered at Sector-39 police station against the caretakers of these elephants for their negligence. They had the licence to keep these animals but did not have the permission to take them from one State to another.
After the accident, police immediately called a veterinarian who declared one of the elephants dead. A team of doctors has been formed to monitor the injured elephant. “The injured elephant could not move as one of its legs came under the wheels of the truck. The animal has severe external injury and there is a dislocated fracture in the hind leg, which will be diagnosed only after an X-ray is conducted. We have administered painkillers, antibiotics along with first aid to the animal and it will be under observation for the next 24 hours,” said Dr Preeti.
After struggling for four hours, the police succeeded in lifting the dead tusker with cranes and finally cleared the road to ease traffic. Police have registered a case under Wildlife Act and Indian Penal Codes (IPC) of 279 (rash driving), 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life). Further investigation is on. A team of officials from the wildlife department was also present at the site of mishap. Commuters said that at present there is no one to enforce traffic rules on the Expressway. Authorities though maintain that various safety measures are in place.

Work for the Khurda-Balangir rail link is going to start soon from the Balangir side, said General Manager East Coast Railways (ECoR) Indra Ghosh on Thursday.
While meeting a delegation of the peoples’ representatives from Balangir district led by local MP Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, Ghosh said work would soon start within a few months from the Balangir-end to speed up the construction work of the much-awaited rail link between western and coastal Odisha.
Ghosh assured the delegation that as the estimate for starting work has already been sent to the authorities last month, the work would begin once the estimate is approved. While work has started from the Khurda Road side, there has been a demand to begin work from the Balangir-end too so that completion of the project would be expedited.
After 18 years of approval of the project, hardly a few kilometres of link has been completed so far while the project cost has escalated to more than `1,000 crore. Though a Computerised Reservation Counter (CRC) at Patnagarh was sanctioned last year under the quota of Balangir MP, till date it has not started working due to non-supply of hardware.
The ECoR GM promised to look into delay of the work on Titlagarh railway over-bridge so that work starts with immediate effect. During the meeting, the demand for an RCC sleeper factory at the Kantabanji railway station was reiterated. It was decided that the matter would be recommended to the Indian Railway Board.
The authorities informed that work on the Balangir-Nuapada railway line via Patnagarh would start soon after the survey report.

Suspected Maoists torched a kendu leaf godown at Bagdore, 25 km from the Belpada police station, in the Bender reserve forest area in Belpada block on Tuesday night.
But the police team could not find any Maoist poster there, said Balangir SP R Praksh to this correspondent
The series of burning of kendu leaf godowns in the district and elsewhere has raised the curiousness of the people as to why the Maoists are carrying out such activities. The Maoists normally use to leave behind posters claiming the responsibility of their acts. But in such cases, no such poster is found.
Then, the question arises as to who are responsible for these incidents — corrupt forest officials to cover up their practices or there is any bigger game-plan involved.

With the reported deadline of March 31, 2013, given by the Centre to the State Government to complete the Lower Suktel Irrigation Project nearing fast, there is apprehension about the fate of the project as work on it is yet to begin.
The Central Government may give more time for this project, informed RDC Northern Division Kishore Chandra Barik in an informal chat with mediapersons after holding a meeting with members of the Balangir Citizens’ Committee, the Lower Suktel Action Committee and affected villagers here on Tuesday.
Asked to comment on the reported deadline, the RDC hinted that more time may be given. Project work can be taken up even in rainy season, he said.
Barik said nobody at the meeting opposed the project. Rather Balangir being a no-industry district, everybody was in favour of the project. “I will instruct the district-level officials to visit the area and expedite various works, including socioeconomic survey.” he said further.
“We discussed with the RDC different points and demanded that the displaced families be given compensation as per the prevailing market rate,” said Srikara Mishra of the Lower Suktel Action Committee. Besides, a proposal to include a sub-canal from the right main canal was also discussed, and once completed it would provide irrigation to10 gram panchyats, he added.
“The RDC assured us to hold frequent review meetings on the project to expedite it. Since the valuation of property was done on the basis of survey carried out seven years ago and as the market rate has gone up in the meanwhile, we demanded compensation as per the prevailing market rate to which the RDC agreed. He said he would send the proposal to the Government for its approval,” said president of Samajwadi Party Balangir unit president Arun Mishra.
