According to a report released by the National Election Watch (NEW), Odisha chapter here on the criminal and financial backgrounds of the MLAs and party candidates by analysing their affidavits, of the total 147 MLAs of Odisha, 48 have pending criminal cases against them with eight being allegedly involved in serious criminal cases. Besides, 33 MLAs are crorepatis.
27 MLAs from the ruling BJD have criminal cases pending against them, followed by 11 MLAs of the Congress, four of the BJP and five belonging to other parties.
The report reveals that out of the 48 MLAs with pending criminal cases, 31 have serious pending criminal cases against them. While 18 BJD MLAs are allegedly involved in serious criminal cases, seven from the Congress, three from the BJP and two belonging to other parties are in the same category.
The report also says that as many as 33 MLAs, that is, 22 per cent, are crorepati while the average asset for an MLA is Rs1.71 crore. Among the major parties, the average asset per MLA for the Congress is Rs51.81 lakh, for BJP is Rs1.40 crore and for BJD is Rs1.05 crore.
But interestingly, as many as 57 legislators have not declared their PAN details.
